Born and raised in Tulita, Yakeleya spent three-terms serving the public in the legislative assembly. His announcement comes months after current chief Bill Erasmus said he would not return to the position for another term.

Yakeleya has been an advocate for protecting all-rights for Indigenous people and encouraging the country to keep its promise of continuing reconciliation efforts for people affected by residential schools.

"As Dene, our culture is the foundation of who we are as a nation," stated Yakeleya in a news release, Tuesday. "We unite as our challenges become more intense on all fronts - socially, economically, politically and personally."

In the release Yakeleya said his platform running for the position is centered around culture, unity and healing.

He said he hopes to continue the membership growth of the Dene Nation which has recently included the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, Fort Chipewyan, AB and recently the Dene Tha First Nation, stated the release.

The election for a new Dene National Chief and Assembly of First Nations Regional Chief will be held in August.
