Fort McPherson man accused of stabbing teen nine times denied bail

A Fort McPherson man accused of stabbing a teen nine times after a night of partying last fall was denied bail in NWT Supreme Court Thursday. Jayden Greenland, 20, is charged with aggravated assault, uttering threats and possessing a dangerous weapon.

Greenland, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, originally elected to be tried by a judge and jury, but later changed his mind, opting to head to trial to face a judge alone.

In bail hearings leading up to jury trials, allegations made in court are protected under a publication ban to avoid tainting potential jurors. But with no jury for Greenland’s trial, Justice Louise Charbonneau forwent a publication ban.

The court heard Greenland, who peered around the courtroom as he sat restlessly in the prisoner’s box, was allegedly drinking at a party in Fort McPherson on the night of Oct. 7, 2017, when an alteration ensued between him and a 17-year-old boy.

The Crown alleges the argument turned into a physical fight, with the two grappling with each other before Greenland repeatedly stabbed the teen.

Greenland is accused of telling the teen he was going to kill him before pulling out and brandishing a second knife to onlookers.

The victim received wounds on his chest and back, requiring stitches as a result.

It’s alleged Greenland told bystanders he’d kill them all.

While the Crown opposed the release of Greenland, who’s been in custody since his arrest a day after the alleged stabbing, the accused’s lawyer attempted to have him released into the care of a relative who would assume the role of a surety.

Charbonneau ultimately dismissed Greenland’s request for bail.

Greenland shook his head in frustration, anxiously inching towards the exit of the courtroom.

The 20-year-old has a criminal record that includes a conviction for pointing a firearm.

Greenland will head to trial for the alleged stabbing in September.
