A Gameti man has been charged with murder in connection with the death of Archie Wedzin.

Alecus Quitte, 21, was charged with murder on May 15 after being arrested in Gameti on the day before, according to RCMP.

Wedzin was declared dead at the Behchoko Health Centre after being found unresponsive on the morning of April 8.

A week later, Wedzin's death was ruled a homicide.

RCMP in Behchoko and Gameti, along with NWT RCMP’s major crimes unit and its Forensic Identification Services are continuing to “follow the leads in this homicide investigation,” stated  Insp. Amber Clark, of the NWT RCMP in a news release issued May 15.

Gameti is about 160 kilometres northwest of Behchoko.

While Mounties continue to follow leads, RCMP are not actively looking for other suspects

“We are thankful to the community of Behchoko in supporting the investigation to the point of this arrest and some resolution for the family” states Insp. Amber Clark, of the NWT RCMP.

“The RCMP thanks the citizens and communities in the Tlicho Region for their support. Our condolences to the family,” added Clark.

Wedzin was remembered as a “loving father” to eight children in one of many memorials and tributes that poured in online following his death.

Quitte was expected to make a brief court appearance in a Yellowknife courtroom on Friday, May 17.
