Inuvik RCMP responded to a report of shots fired near Alder Drive at about 10:45 a.m. on June 14.

A resident of the area, who asked not to be identified, said she was home when the incident took place, but was asleep and did not hear any shots fired. She woke up to a phone call from a scared neighbour.

"Of course we were so scared," the resident said. "My neighbour heard the shots … all my neighbours seemed like they were pretty terrified."

The resident said they watched some of the incident from their front door.

"When I went out on the stairs, I saw the RCMP lights flashing, and I saw them going into the house with big guns out," the resident said. "When they came out, the RCMP were pointing their guns right at [the suspect], and they were saying 'get down on your knees, lay down on the ground,' and he was following their directions."

The resident she called one of her children, who was heading home for lunch at the time, saying not to come home.

"Lots of kids live down our street and lots come home for lunch, but the RCMP weren't letting anyone onto Alder Drive, they had both ends of the street blocked off," the resident said. "They were blocked off for about two hours, maybe less."

Police contained the scene and made contact with a suspect inside the residence, who was taken into custody without incident.

The resident said she was disappointed that no one followed up with the street's residents about the incident afterwards.

"We weren't sure what happened, no one came around to tell us about what had happened,"

"When these things happen, they should at least come door-to-door and let people know if everything is okay."

No injuries were sustained, according to the release, and the investigation is continuing.
