The Hay River Seniors' Society will hold its annual general meeting on April 7.

The meeting will be highlighted by the annual election of board members.

Currently, six people sit on the board.

"I think probably seven is a good number to have on the board," said Tom Makepeace, president of the society. "Eight, if possible."

Makepeace himself plans to run for re-election to the board, noting that he is also serving on the board of the NWT Seniors' Society until October.

"I'm willing to be on our board here at least until that term expires and see how things go," he said.

The executive of the Hay River Seniors' Society is not elected at the AGM.

After the board is elected, the members choose the executive – a president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer.

"We're looking for new people to sit on the executive to come forward to manage the seniors operation," said Makepeace.

The current president noted the society offers many activities for seniors, but more could be offered if more people got involved, either as board members or volunteers.

Makepeace explained that one of the goals of such activities is to prevent some seniors from being isolated in their homes with nothing to do.

However, he noted the seniors' meeting room at the Whispering Willows Seniors Complex is underutilized because not enough people want to step forward to organize activities.

"I don't know what it is. That's my disappointment," he said.

Still, many activities are offered through the society.

"We're moving along," said Makepeace. "As much as people want to do, we can do."

The president also estimated there are about 600 seniors in Hay River, but the seniors' society has a membership of only about 100.

Makepeace encourages seniors to get involved in the society as a way of having a voice on issues that concern them.

"If you definitely want to have input into what's happening with the seniors on our level, the NWT seniors' level and the Canadian seniors' level, that's all interconnected because we're a part of all those three groups," he said.

The annual general meeting of the Hay River Seniors' Society will begin at 2 p.m. on April 7 in the meeting room at Whispering Willows.

A yearly membership to the society costs $5. A membership is required to run for a seat on the board and to vote in elections.
