Paul Bickford/NNSL photo The ceremonial opening of the newly-chipsealed section of Highway 5 through Wood Buffalo National Park on Oct. 13 included a good-bye to the sign that had previously warned of the gravel section on the road. Holding the sign are, left to right, Kevin Smith, deputy mayor of Fort Smith; Chief Frieda Martselos of Salt River First Nation; Northwest Territories MP Michael McLeod; Mayor Brad Mapes of Hay River; Chief Roy Fabian of K'atlodeeche First Nation; and Cam Zimmer, superintendent of Wood Buffalo National Park.

Salt River First Nation Chief Frieda Martselos annihilated incumbent and cabinet minister Louis Sebert in Thebacha.

She took 504 votes to Sebert's 70, placing the former justice minister safely in last place. Former constituency assistant to Mike Miltenberger Denise Yuhas took second place with 454 votes. Former newspaper publisher Don Jaque took 139 votes in his second run in the riding.

More to come.
