Vancouver company, Fathom Marine successfully freed a fuel barge that was grounded near Tuktoyaktuk a year ago. In September of 2016, Fathom's barge, Investigator, came loose from its tugboat and ran aground at Toker Point, just north of the community.

Fathom removed fuel from the barge a month after the barge ran aground in 2016 and last month the company made an unsuccessful attempt to refloat the barge, this month they were successful in refloating the vessel according to Canadian Coast Guard communication advisor, Rachelle Smith.

Smith said in a communication with News/North that no pollution has been observed or reported over the past year the barge has been aground at Toker Point.

"The Canadian Coast Guard recognizes the work and support of all partners in ensuring that the refloating and removal of the barge were carried out safely and is committed to protecting our coastal communities and marine environments," Smith said.

The barge currently sits secured in Tuktoyaktuk.
