LETTER: Time to start healing

by Winston McNeely,
president FGH Metis Local #54 Land Corporation
Fort Good Hope, NT

Dear editor,

We are writing in concern about the circumstances of people and the issue of residential school.

The federal government has apologized and paid out former residential school students. There are programs available for former residential school students. We feel that people should leave the residential school issue alone now and start the healing process.

If people want to write books, etcetera … they should be the ones paying for it, not our land corporations. I think that this matter of residential schools should be done. In the future, our next generation children will see these books and (the hurt will) be dug up again and again.

Leaders are being sworn at and disrespected and I don't think we should or will have to put up with this sort of mistreatment of our leaders. If writing a book is going to cause hurting of leaders then it is time to leave the issue of residential school behind us and start healing.
