Two people face multiple gun and drug charges after Fort Providence RCMP seized cocaine, cash and a loaded AR-15 rifle in a pair of searches carried out in the community.

Mounties conducted two simultaneous search warrants on Oct. 20, raiding a Fort Providence residence and searching a vehicle around 1:30 a.m. In the home, according to a news release issued last week, officers found cocaine, cash and various “drug trafficking paraphernalia.”

The search of the vehicle, executed during a traffic stop in the community, netted a loaded AR-15 carbine rifle, cash and drug trafficking paraphernalia, stated the news release.

Police say the searches resulted in the arrests of two adults males and one youth – a 15-year-old male who can't be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act – but only two individuals have been charged.

Thirty-year-old Cassiuis Paradis, and the youth – both from Edmonton, Alta. – both face seven drug and firearm-related charges, including possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, unauthorized possession of a firearm and possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition.

The pair also face a charge each for allegedly breaching probation conditions.

Their arrests and the seizure of drugs and a firearm, is the result of “separate short-term investigations into alleged drug trafficking in Fort Providence”, stated Mounties. “The investigations by our Fort Providence RCMP members has removed dangerous weapons and illicit drugs from our community.”

By continuing to enforce “these types of offences,” through regular check stops in the community, RCMP say they're “sending a strong message to those considering this type of activity,” read the news release.

Paradis made a brief court appearance in Yellowknife last week. On Oct. 24, he listened as Justice of the Peace Adelle Guigon read aloud the long list of charges he faces.

Paradis has retained a private lawyer in Edmonton.

Guigon ordered a no-contact order for Paradis, meaning he's barred from communication with the co-accused.

Paradis is due to be in court today for a show cause hearing.
