CANDIDATE ANSWERS: Louis Sebert, Thebacha

Our editorial board has put together three questions for all MLA candidates and acclaimed members seeking public office as part of our coverage of the 2019 territorial election.

Over the remainder of the campaign, we will publish responses on our website.

The three questions are:

  1. What is your position on the carbon tax and would you repeal it if the Liberal government is defeated in the federal election? How should the NWT play a part in combating climate change?
  2. How do you as an MLA intend to improve the economy?
  3. Would you support an Indigenous-based addictions treatment centre in the Northwest Territories?

1. What is your position on the carbon tax and would you repeal it if the Liberal government is defeated in the federal election? How should the NWT play a part in combating climate change?

Louis Sebert, incumbent MLA for Thebacha

The GNWT approach to the carbon tax was a reasonable response to the federal government's carbon tax. I am not expecting the Federal legislation to be repealed and in any case would not be in favour of repealing our carbon tax legislation. Global warming is real and our approach is a well-reasoned step in combating climate change.

2. How do you as an MLA intend to improve the economy?

If a business case can be made, the Talston expansion should be pursued as it would create employment, provide clean energy and encourage development in the Slave Geological Province where there is huge mining potential. The expansion of Talston would also create a stream of income for our Indigenous partners enabling them to pursue other business opportunities.

3. Would you support an Indigenous-based addictions treatment centre in the Northwest Territories?

Yes, if it was economically feasible and a proper location and staff could be found.
