A Yellowknife man arrested last year after a traffic stop near Enterprise yielded restricted guns has pleaded guilty to firearm-related offences in NWT Supreme Court in Yellowknife.

Michael Taylor, 28, pleaded guilty on May 28 to one count of transporting restricted firearms without proper storage, one count of possessing a weapon obtained by commission of an offence, and one count of possessing a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition.

In February 2017, five handguns were located in a vehicle occupied by Taylor and another person.

In March 2017, it was reported that the police seizure included three handguns stolen in Yellowknife hours before the stop.

Taylor is due back in court for sentencing on July 6.

Contract awarded for street project

At its May 29 meeting, town council awarded a contract for Courtoreille Street improvements.

The contract went to Rowe's Construction for $1,176,268.

Earle Dumas, the town's director of projects and planning, could not give council a firm date on when the work would begin.

"This is all to be done this year," Dumas said.

The project includes replacing the water main, new service connections, and sidewalk and roadway improvements.

Courtoreille Street has experienced multiple water main breaks with costly excavations to repair in the last few years, most recently in the fall of last year. The sewer mains on this street were re-lined in 2017 and will not require replacement.

Rowe's Construction was the only bidder for the project.
