Man says RCMP shattered his kneecap

A man is accusing RCMP of shattering his kneecap in Fort McPherson last month.

Rudolph Francis, 24, was charged on Nov. 23 with assault, resisting arrest and mischief.

Court in Yellowknife heard that Francis had to be medevaced to an Edmonton hospital for surgery following the incident.

The lawyer representing Francis at his bail hearing said Francis claims police jumped on top of him. It is not clear whether Francis was in custody at the time of the alleged attack.

Francis hobbled into court in Yellowknife on crutches on Dec 13. He is currently being held at the North Slave Correctional Centre awaiting a bail hearing.

The RCMP have yet to explain their version of events.
