NEWS BRIEFS: 5K Run & Walk set for weekend

A 5K Run & Walk is set for May 26, beginning at the Hay River Recreation Centre.

Registration will take place between 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m., and the event will begin at 1 p.m.

A map will be provided during registration showing the route to the Welcome to Hay River sign and back.

The event is being sponsored by the Town of Hay River.

BMX/skate park group to hold AGM

The Hay River BMX/Skate Park Association will hold its annual general meeting on May 24, beginning at noon at NWT Centennial Library.

The meeting will include the election of an executive.

Topics for discussion include completion of the Chaser BMX/Skate Park and assisting the Town of Hay River with organizing summer events and skate jams.

Church to hold roof fundraiser

Our Lady of Assumption Parish Church will hold a Raise the Roof Fundraiser on May 26.

The event, which will be held in the church basement beginning at 6 p.m., will feature a dinner followed by entertainment.

Tickets sales will help replace the church's roof this summer.

Animal Welfare Society to meet

The Hay River Animal Welfare Society will hold its annual general meeting on May 29, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Community Learning Centre of Aurora College.

An election will be held for a board of directors.

GNWT to honour tourism hosts

The Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment is celebrating Tourism Week – May 27 to June 1 – by recognizing NWT residents who make visitors feel welcome.

The NWT Host Contest invites participants to nominate someone via social media with #NWTHost for a chance to win that person $250.

The contest began on May 14 and runs to June 1, and ten prizes of $250 will be awarded.

In a May 17 news release, the GNWT noted the contest recognizes the important role that community members have on the territory's $200-million tourism industry.

 

Literacy society sets its annual meeting

The Hay River Literacy Society will hold its annual general meeting on May 28, beginning at noon at the Community Learning Centre of Aurora College.
