Chase the Ace will return on March 30 after a one-week absence.

The popular weekly lottery was not held on March 23 because of the 2018 South Slave Arctic Winter Games, which concluded on March 24.

Chase the Ace is presented by the host society for the Arctic Winter Games.

Dead North Film Festival coming

The Hay River Film Society and the Artless Collective/Aerials North are bringing films from the 2018 Dead North Film Festival to Hay River.

In all, 48 short films from the Yellowknife festival will play at the Riverview Cineplex on April 6 and 7.

Each evening, 24 brand-new films will play.

Organizers are advising parents that some of the films have R-rated content.

Dead North Film Festival is encouraging guests to come to the festival in whatever movie costumes they wish, including as characters from previous Dead North films, or other horror/sci-fi/fantasy film, or something completely original.

Schumann talks fishery strategy

Wally Schumann, the minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment, updated the legislative assembly on March 13 on the revitalization of the Great Slave Lake Fishery.

Schumann said there are five components that will be essential to realizing the vision: a new fish processing plant in Hay River; collection stations in Yellowknife and Fort Resolution; new fishers to maintain quota and supply; a marketing strategy to develop a new Northern brand, identifying target markets and expand sales; and new products, such as roe, fresh and frozen fillets, and fertilizer.

The GNWT is seeking federal government funding to help build a fish plant.

"Should all funding be secured, we are prepared to invest as much as $12 million into this critical piece of infrastructure," said Schumann, who is also the minister of Infrastructure.

The Department of Infrastructure is already working on site selection, equipment purchasing, and a tender for building design.

Schumann said the challenge is to put all pieces in place in the next couple of months so that construction can begin in the summer of 2019 and a new fish plant could be ready to go in Hay River for the 2020 fishing season.
