The 48th Dene National Assembly will be hosted by West Point First Nation in Hay River in August.
The meeting will take place from Aug. 20 to 24 and will include the election of a Dene National and Assembly of First Nations Regional chief.
Also on the agenda are amendments to the Dene Nation constitution and bylaws, and other official Dene Nation business.
The forum is meant to support the Dene Nation's goals of upholding the rights and interests of the Dene, including those arising from treaties with the Crown and from their use and occupation of their lands.
Missing Hay River woman located
British Columbia RCMP have located a Hay River woman who was reported missing on June 14. She had last been seen in Surrey, B.C.
Brittany Martel, who is 27 years old and lives in West Kelowna, B.C., was found "safe and sound," stated the RCMP on July 3.
At the time of her disappearance, police believed Martel may have been attempting to hitchhike to Hay River.
Martel had not made a social media post since June 22 and her cell phone did not appear to be working.
Author presents book on NWT bush pilot
Wilderness writer and guide Rob Kesselring will present on his book Merlyn Carter Bush Pilot at the NWT Centennial Library on July 24.
The biography was published on April 1 and is described as a "rollicking read about an uncommon man in an uncommon place at an uncommon time."
Merlyn Carter was based in Hay River for more than 50 years and ran sport fishing camps in addition to a small aviation company.
In 2005, Carter was mauled to death by a black bear at his fishing camp on Nonacho Lake, which is about 260 km southeast of Yellowknife.
"Merlyn Carter Bush Pilot is more than just a true-life story of one of Canada's most famous bush pilots. It is a deeply moving, historical account of a bygone time when bush planes ruled the skies of northern Canada," stated outdoor writer Cliff Jacobson. "A riveting read."
Born in Schenectady, New York, Kesselring lived in the Northwest Territories for nine years and was close friends with the eponymous protagonist of his book.
Copies of the book will be up for sale following Kesselring's presentation, which will take place between 7 and 9 p.m.
