On July 31, the Department of Health and Social Services announced the 14 schools chosen to receive awards as part of the 2017-2018 Drop the Pop campaign.

This year, 48 schools participated in Drop the Pop, using funding provided by the GNWT to promote healthy food and beverage choices. The winning schools will be awarded prizes ranging from $800-$1,500.

The award winners include three Hay River schools – Princess Alexandra School, Diamond Jenness Secondary School and Ecole Boreale.

Chief Sunrise Education Centre on the Hay River Reserve is also an award winner.

"Choosing healthy drinks makes a difference to the overall health of children and youth," said Health and Social Services Minister Glen Abernethy in a news release. "The creative work that students and schools have done to promote healthier choices is helping us build healthier communities."

A kayaking clinic for youngsters aged seven to 12 years will be held at the Hay River Beach on Aug. 12.

The clinic will be an introduction to kayaking, including stroke improvement and safety.

It is being presented by the Town of Hay River.

The town is looking for a returning officer for the municipal elections in the fall.

Goucher said the town will be working with the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs to prepare for the elections, and the City of Yellowknife will help mentor Hay River through this process.

"This is my first election, so I'm seeking some networking opportunities there," the SAO explained.
