NEWS BRIEFS: National Drowning Prevention Day

Wednesday (July 17) is National Drowning Prevention Day and the Aquatic Centre is holding a special event to spread awareness about safe water practices.

The Lifesaving Society states that around 500 Canadians die each year in preventable water-related incidents.

Head to the pool between 2 and 4 p.m. to take part in games and activities at water-smart stations.

Admission is free.

Porritt Landing lottery July 27

The lottery for a seasonal watercraft docking space at Porritt Landing will take on July 27 at 4 p.m.

Winners will be assigned a designated spot at the boat launch, and will have the opportunity to renew their slip season pass next summer.

Those whose names are not drawn in the lottery can put themselves on a waiting list.

Seasonal slip passes cost $215 this summer, and $470 for the full summer season of 2019.

There are 15 spots available for docking, three of which can accommodate boats longer than 7.3 metres (24 feet) and/or wider than 3.4 metres (11 feet).

Lottery winners will be contacted on July 30.

The deadline to enter the lottery is July 27 at 3 p.m.

BBQ Pitmaster competition rescheduled

The BBQ Pitmaster Beach Party was cancelled last weekend due to bad weather and has been rescheduled for this Saturday.

Teams of four will duke it out in a battle of the grills, cooking up chicken wings, pork ribs and brisket.

For $20, spectators can taste the results and judge which team they believe should be deemed the "pitmasters."

A ticket also provides entry to the nighttime dance, which includes live music.

The pitmaster challenge will take place at 2 seasons beach from noon to 6 p.m. and the dance runs from 8 p.m. until 2 a.m.

Entry is restricted to those 19 years of age and older.
