Hay River town council has agreed in principle to convert Courtoreille Street into a one-way thoroughfare.

The move would increase the cost of construction on the downtown street by $315,000, a portion of which would be paid by the street's property owners.

The town is currently in talks with the property owners about how the cost will divided up.

Council agreed on July 17 to the one-way plan in principle, because the property owners had yet to agree to pay a their share of the cost.

Under the proposed one-way plan, traffic would flow from Woodland Drive to Capital Drive, and sidewalks would be widened and made accessible.

There was no discussion about the plan before council members voted.

Coun. Keith Dohey voted against the agreement in principle, and deputy mayor Donna Lee Jungkind was absent.

Munro wins bronze in Alberta track meet

Declan Munro of Hay River took home a bronze medal at the Alberta Provincial Track and Field Championships in Calgary over the July 14 weekend.

Munro hit 10.38 metres in triple jump in the U16 division, tying with Yellowknifer Luke Dizon.

It felt good to win a medal down south, Munro said from his home on Thursday.

"I'm always pretty nervous before a meet," he said.

"Down south you don't really know anybody, so you aren't to sure who you're competing against."

Munro is happy with his performance in Calgary.

He placed 7th in the 1,200 metre event and 4th in the 800 metre.

Running is Munro's primary focus.

"Triple jump is just kind of something I do on the side," he said.

Though the track season is winding down, Munro plans to keep training until the end of the summer to improve his times.
