Sentencing rescheduled to next week for Inuvik man

Inuvik

Corey Cardinal, 30, who was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, appeared in front of NWT Supreme Court Justice Louise Charbonneau on April 23.

In 2016, Cardinal, intoxicated and suicidal while in a home in Inuvik, placed the barrel of a shotgun to his chin and fired, but missed after a friend pushed the gun away. Angry, Cardinal fired two more shots – neither hit or injured anyone. The gun in Cardinal's possession was a sawed-off shotgun with a barrel length of 396 millimetres; making the weapon he was operating a prohibited firearm.

Both the crown and defence read their final submissions to the court. Cardinal provided Charbonneau a letter of apology which highlighted Cardinal's efforts to rehabilitate by attending weekly counselling sessions at the Fort Smith Correctional Centre.

Justice Charbonneau told the defendant she would read over his letter thoroughly while considering her sentencing. Charbonneau said she needed time to think about the case before she made her final decision. She has rescheduled sentencing for May 3, at 2 p.m.

Cardinal has been in custody for a total of 1,120.5 days which equals credit for three-years or 36 months.
