The Mackenzie Recreation Association will hold a recreation leader training camp early next month on the Hay River Reserve.

The camp will be held from July 4 to July 7 at the Jim Lamalice Wilderness Lodge.

One or two participants may be attending from each of the 19 communities covered by the Mackenzie Recreation Association.

In all, 20-40 leaders are expected from the Mackenzie region so they can return to their communities and provide recreation, sport and physical activity programming that is safe, high quality and sustainable.

The Mackenzie Recreation Association is covering the expenses for accommodations, food, travel and certifications for participants.

Summer Reading Club at library

The Summer Reading Club is about to start at NWT Centennial Library and run throughout July and August.

Children and youth can stop by the library any day after July 5 to pick up their passports and start tracking their reading.

Weekly prizes will be awarded.

The Kyle Crook Fiddle Association is about to begin its afternoon summer sessions of musical instruction.

Guitar and percussion will be taught from July 9 to July 13; piano accompaniment from July 16 to July 20; fiddling from Aug. 6 to Aug. 10; and beginner keyboard theory review from Aug. 13 to Aug. 17.

Instruments will be provided.

More information, including on the fees, can be obtained from the Kyle Crook Fiddle Association.

Youth Ambassador applications invited

The Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) is accepting applications for the 2018-2019 Northwest Territories Youth Ambassador Program.

The program provides NWT youth with opportunities to build leadership skills through participation at special events and volunteer assignments.

In the past, NWT Youth Ambassadors have attended the Arctic Winter Games, Canada Winter Games, Canada Summer Games and the North American Indigenous Games.

Applicants are selected based on community involvement, commitment to a healthy lifestyle and a personal reflection on how the Youth Ambassador Program will help them in the future.

The deadline to apply is Sept. 19.

In order to qualify for the program, youth must be between 16 and 24 years of age on Feb. 1, 2019.
