A preliminary hearing for Hay River's Levi Cayen, one of four people charged in relation to the December death of 25-year-old Alexander Norwegian, has been set following a Yellowknife court appearance via video on May 29.

Six witnesses will be called over a four-day period ending on Nov. 21.

Levi Cayen, 20, is charged with first-degree murder and robbery.

Preliminary hearings are used to determine if the Crown has enough evidence to take a case to trial.

Norwegian's body was found inside a vehicle on the access road to Sandy Creek on the Hay River Reserve on Dec. 28.

Twenty-five-year old Sasha Cayen, charged with manslaughter and robbery in Norwegian's death, also appeared in NWT Territorial Court via video on May 30, when she discharged her now former lawyer Charles Davison.

It could take up to a month for Legal Aid to assign Sasha Cayen a new lawyer.

In another video appearance, 32-year-old Tyler Cayen, charged with robbery and being an accessory to murder after the fact, elected to be tried by a judge and jury with the benefit of a preliminary hearing.

The fourth accused, 26-year-old James Thomas, entered the same election as Tyler Cayen in April.

Thomas is charged with first-degree murder and robbery.
