RCMP investigating sudden death of man in Fort Providence

Fort Providence RCMP are probing a sudden death in the community.

A 57-year-old man was found deceased approximately 0.5 kilometres outside Fort Providence after Mounties received a report of the death around 12 p.m. Wednesday, state police in a news release.

Authorities have not yet released the deceased man's identity but a resident of the community told News/North the man was named Manuel.

The resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, said the man had been living in a pup tent just outside of the community since the beginning of the summer.

The resident told News/North the man was found frozen to death inside the tent Wednesday morning.

The community resident is expressing anger and concern following the man's death.

"Why didn't NWT Housing Corp. do anything about it? They could have given him a place in a seniors' home," the resident said in a phone interview.

News/North has not yet confirmed the man's living conditions at the time of his death.

Both RCMP and NWT Coroner Service are investigating the death and a post mortem autopsy has been ordered.

More to come.
