The Government of Canada is contributing $37.8 million to three large infrastructure projects across the territory.
The Taltson Hydroelectric Facility will be receiving major renovations, For Simpson will be getting a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) generator to replace their diesel generator and Lutsel K’e is getting a new diesel generator.
"Northerners depend on a secure, affordable and sustainable energy supply to power their homes, industries and businesses," stated Wally Shcumann, Minister of Infrastructure.
"Investing in the Fort Simpson Liquefied Natural Gas Project, the Lutsel K’e Diesel Power Plant Project as well as the Taltson Hydroelectric Overhaul Project will support the Vision as set out in the GNWT’s 2030 Energy Strategy for a secure, affordable and sustainable energy system."
All three of these projects are slated to improve the efficiency and reliability of power delivery in the communities.
The Northwest Territories Power Corporation will also be contributing $12.6 million to these projects.
These projects are being funded through the Green Infrastructure stream and the Arctic Energy Fund under the Government of Canada’s Investing in Canada Infrastructure Plan.
The federal government has put aside $180 billion in the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan, $2 billion of which is meant for supporting northern communities and $4 billion for projects in Indigenous communities.
