UNW voting on strike

The Union of Northern Workers and NWT Power Corporation will know in December whether there will be a strike.

The UNW is demanding "better economic increases" for all its workers at Power corp., said Todd Parsons, UNW president.

Parsons said the employer is refusing to move on a percentage increase for workers and adds the current rate is not sustainable.

Parsons said workers are "very vocal" about the potential strike since MLAs receive automatic living increases tied to the consumer price index.

The UNW is looking to negotiate better job security for its workers with annual reviews of sub-contracts for quality and cost effectiveness.

A strike vote for the Yellowknife division was held Nov.8. Other communities in the NWT will continue to vote until all ballots have been counted in early December.
