Wildfire smoke possible in Fort Smith, Behchoko, Whati this weekend

Wildfire smoke could affect air quality in Northwest Territories communities including Fort Smith, Whati and Bechoko this weekend.

The GNWT’s environment department said in a social media post Friday there are 21 wildfires burning in the NWT. No communities are threatened by fire.

Nineteen of the fires are in the South Slave. One fire is burning two kilometres from the crews building the Tlicho all-season road 36 km west of Behchoko. It’s grown to 655 hectares; the four crews fighting it are supported by three helicopters.

Fire ZF-013 has consumed 655 hectares of forest and is burning 36 km west of Behchoko.

The remaining 354-ha fire is burning 12 km south of Inuvik. It’s under control and the crews that were fighting it are being sent home.
