February 25, 2025

In Memory It is with profound sadness that the family of Ella Mae Maher announces her peaceful passing on February 25, 2025, at the age of 89 years.

Born in Brampton she put herself through Queen's University where she got her degree as a high school math teacher. Her first job was in Fort Frances, and it was there she met the love of her life, a fellow teacher, James Maher. They were married in 1958 and welcomed two boys in Fort Frances, Thomas and Peter. In 1961, they headed north and ended up in Inuvik where they reached their greatest achievement as parents welcoming Michael and Patrick. They also spent time in Hay River where Ella Mae was one of the first female councillors in the town's history. They left the North in 1990, retiring to Stony Plain where they enjoyed time with lifelong friends and family.

Ella Mae was a strong, intelligent, fierce woman who was known for her compassion. Her door was always open but her sympathy came with a strong dose of tough love. She could give you a hug, dry your tears and kick your butt all at the same time.

She was a card shark and especially loved playing bridge. Cards were a staple at the Maher home. There was always a game afoot and it was always for money. There were no participation medals awarded in the Maher household. She also loved bingo, and spending time with friends at the bingo hall were cherished.

And through all of the good times, and all of the bad times. Through all the ups and all the downs. From Fort Frances to Inuvik, Jim and Ella Mae lived the greatest love story ever told. Their commitment and devotion to each other was an inspiration. Today we say good-bye to the greatest woman you have ever known.

Her humour, warmth and love for her family and friends will leave a lasting legacy. She will be treasured by all that knew her.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 67 years James; her four boys Thomas (Cindy), Peter (Helene), Michael and Patrick (Marla); grandchildren Jody, Jennifer, Zack, Tanya, Bryce, Tyson, Jhet and Brook; great grandchildren Ella, Ethan, Kayden, Caleb and Emmie.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

God Bless you Ella Mae Maher.

May you rest in Peace.
