Welcome to the beautiful island of the Inuinnait, land of the Kiilinikmiut, land of the Copper Inuit.
Cambridge Bay has been busy this time of year with the annual trade show organized by the Kitikmeot Chamber of Commerce, with hundreds of visitors attending the greatest show in Nunavut. This year the entertainment was provided by the Crash Test Dummies.
Many companies from mining, education and more were in town to have important meetings to provide many opportunities to residents of the Kitikmeot and especially focusing on youth and those who are still in school or in training. And partnerships were made that are important in today’s work/training industry.
Each year agencies and governments provide so much information for employment, training and future goals and dreams. Youth are so eager for the annual trade show to be introduced to future goals and opportunities which are offered in either industry; local, federal or territorial governments; education plans; etc. There is so much these days when it comes to employment and or training.
Many residents also get many souvenirs and swag from booths that are often available. The littlest kids are most fun to watch as they walk around the trade show floor, and of course our Elders who love those coffee mugs, bags and much more. Today, there are a lot of opportunities, whether you are a seamstress, carver, hunter, fishers or wanting to become a pilot, or other professional, but many have to go south and leave home to where the universities, colleges offer training, which is hard on some individuals or families.
Today, we have Nunavut Arctic College campuses across Nunavut in most Nunavut communities, and we have our own high schools now where many more Inuit are graduating from Grade 12. And no one is sent away to attend residential school anymore. Our youth today are our future leaders and we must ensure they are well cared for, and to keep encouraging them to stay in school.
We hope everyone enjoyed visiting our great community of Cambridge Bay and that the cold weather did not bother you while in our beautiful community. Quana for taking time to be with residents of Nunavut, Elders will miss you all, the youth will look forward to next year. And to the Crash Test Dummies, I hope you enjoyed visiting and performing in Cambridge Bay. To the youth, I hope you have set your goals and dreams and to keep up the great work you are doing either in school or in your home communities. We are so proud of you all, stay in school. Enjoy life — there’s so much out there for us all. And to our sweet loving caring Elders, quana for being there for us all.
God Be With You Son. You are always in our hearts forever.
