Inuvik's slo-pitch women heading to 2019 nationals

Inuvik's women's slo-pitch team, Totally Twisted, is set to represent Team NWT nationally next year after winning the 2018 women's territorial championship July 1.

Team captain Courtney Larocque said it felt amazing to win.

"It was top of seven, they were batting and we had the bottom … we just had to hold them, they weren't allowed to get any more than two runs in, so we got the first two outs," said Larocque. "One lady hit it out and made it to second. Our right fielder, she fumbled the winning catch – but that's fine – and then Britney caught the winning catch."

Totally Twisted faced off against Rebecca's Rowdy Roses in the final match.

Kyle Kuptana, one of the coaches for Totally Twisted, said the team didn't realize they had won until they were back in the dugout.

"The girls came together and had a lot of fun and that's why I think they won. We took it like every other game – calm, cool, lots of laughs and smiles," said Kuptana. "They didn't even know they won until they came in the dugout!"

Kuptana said he's happy to see slo-pitch bring together the territory's communities in Inuvik.

Four teams from around the territory played in the tournament from June 29 to July 1.

Larocque said about 60 women participated in the tournament, which is held in Inuvik every year.

"Women's baseball is growing here, and it's really nice to see all of the ladies come out," said Larocque. "It's grown from one team to a situation where we could probably have six women's teams playing in a tournament if we all were able to get together."

Totally Twisted was sponsored by the late Adam Myer, and continues to be sponsored by his family. Myer owned Twisted Ladle Enterprises.

Totally Twisted team member Chelsea Larocque said they play slo-pitch in Myer's honour and they want to dedicate their win to him.
