One more Northerner on the roster

A total of three NWT-born athletes will be heading to PyeongChang, South Korea, for the 2018 Winter Olympics after Jesse Cockney was named to the men's cross-country skiing roster on Monday.

The official announcement came from Canmore, Alta., where Cockney has lived since moving from Yellowknife at the age of seven.

Cockney began skiing at the Yellowknife Ski Club and comes from a fine skiing lineage. His father, Angus Cockney, is a graduate of the Territorial Experimental Ski Training (TEST) program and won two gold medals at the 1975 Canada Winter Games.

The younger Cockney joins Kevin Koe, who was also born in Yellowknife, and Hay River's Brendan Green on the Olympic team.

Kerry Galusha battles on

It's been an up-and-down start for Kerry Galusha and company at the 2018 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Penticton, B.C.

Galusha and her rink of Shona Barbour, Megan Koehler and Sarah Koltun of Whitehorse started out with a 9-6 win over Yukon on Saturday before falling to Saskatchewan on Sunday 8-4. She kept it going on Monday morning with an 8-7 win over New Brunswick before taking on Manitoba later in the evening.

There was just one game for the ladies yesterday against Nova Scotia before they hit the ice for two games today against the wild card team of Kerri Einarson this morning and Northern Ontario this evening.

Scholastic curlers ready for action

The best scholastic curlers in the NWT will converge on the Yellowknife Curling Centre for the NWT School Curling Championship, which begins on Friday.

A total of six teams will compete over the course of the weekend and all but one – a Hay River squad –hail from Yellowknife.

Action will continue for most of the day on Saturday with playoffs and finals on Sunday morning.
