The next big school sports event in Yellowknife is off and running.

The NWT Power Corporation Junior Cager basketball tournament tipped off yesterday afternoon at gymnasiums around the city with the Yellowknife schools hitting the court first. The round-robin continues today with the community teams starting their action. Along with Yellowknife, there are teams from Hay River, Fort Good Hope and Inuvik joining in.

As with last year, the Grade 6 boys and girls will compete in a 3-on-3 tournament, something Damien Healy, president of Basketball NWT, said was a big hit. The Grade 7 and 8 divisions will all be played under regular basketball rules.

The round-robin finishes up for all divisions tomorrow with the playoffs and championship games on Sunday.

Hockey in the Tlicho

The third annual Air Tindi Cup Youth Hockey Challenge wrapped up in Behchoko on Jan. 28 and there was some Yellowknife representation on the ice.

Brad Mueller, an instructor with Hockey NWT, along with Tehnille Gard and Jeanne Yurris from Yk Women's Hockey, led the skills and drills portion of the weekend.

Mike Yakabuski, who helped organize the event, said a number of the youth participating had some of the basic hockey skills down and got a chance to work on new skills but for others, it was their first time participating in hockey skills and drills and playing in a tournament.

See the Feb. 12 edition of NWT News/North for the full recap.

Yellowknife duo set to hit the water

The Polar Bear Swim Club won't officially be part of the 2018 Pugsley's Plunge meet in Calgary this weekend but two of its swimmers are competing.

Madison Penney and Gabriel Leclerc will be embedded among the athletes at the event, which starts this afternoon. Both swimmers are entered in a total of seven events each over the course of the meet.

They are also scheduled to take part in a camp organized by the Calgary Patriots Swim Club, the same club which hosted the meet.
