Sports Check: Arctic Showcase takes place this weekend

The top Northern hockey players will battle it out for hockey supremacy across two divisions this weekend at the 2018 Arctic Showcase.

In the bantam division the Canada Winter Games Women's team will take on the NWT bantam team, the Yellowknife Sporting Club and the CR Oilers.

In the Canada Winter Games Division, Team NT and Team Nunavut will be joined by Shawnigan Lake Prep School out of B.C. for a number of showcase matches.

The games will begin Friday evening at the multiplex and wrap up Sunday evening

 

Table Tennis Championships set in the capital

The NWT Territorial School championships will take place this coming weekend.

The action will be happening in the Weledeh Gymnasium, the championships will begin on Friday and wrap up late Saturday. This will be the final table tennis tournament of 2018 and the only school championships of the 2018-2019 school year.

Weledeh, St. Pats, William MacDonald and Deh Gah school in Fort Providence have all confirmed they will attend the tournament. An NWT Table Tennis workshop will accompany the tournament on Sunday.

 

Tennis NWT board member wins national recognition

Slavica Jovic, the junior co-ordinator for NWT Tennis recently received the Distinguish Service Award from Tennis Canada.

Jovic was nominated for the award by John St. Louis, president of Tennis NWT and Jeannie Scott, president of the Yellowknife Tennis Club. The award is presented to members of Tennis Canada that have a minimum of five years of service and “demonstrates an outstanding commitment to the sport as an organizer of tournaments, leagues, special events or developmental programs and activities,” among a number of other criteria.

Jovic has been with Team NWT since 2013 and has since established a number of programs for junior athletes in the territory.

Kickmas Registration opens

The Registration for the annual Kickmas soccer tournament is now open.

This year the tournament will be for the adults as the only age division is labeled as 18 and up. Registration will cost $35 and all players need to be registered with NWT Soccer before they can play.

The tournament will take place on Dec. 30 with registration closing on Dec 23.
