SPORTS CHECK: Olympians on the move, curling playdowns

Olympians get moving

They may not live here anymore but Yellowknife's contributions to the 2018 Winter Olympics are off and running in PyeongChang, South Korea.

Jesse Cockney got going early yesterday morning – evening in PyeongChang – in cross-country skiing as he competed in the men's classic sprint. The qualifiers were first up, followed by the quarter-final round, semifinal round and the final, if he advanced that far.

Kevin Koe is up in men's curling and you'll be able to watch his first match-up against Italy at 5:05 p.m. MST. His second game against Great Britain isn't happening until early tomorrow morning at 4:05 a.m.

Club curlers set for battle

The Fort Smith Curling Club will be the site for the NWT Travelers Curling Club Playdowns, which begin on Friday morning.

Yellowknife will have two rinks in play – one in each the men's and women's draws. Sarah Stroeder will skip the women's rink and she will be taking on a team from Hay River in a best-of-five series to determine who will advance to the national championships later this year. Just two women's teams signed up to play.

On the men's side, Shadrach McLeod is the skip and he will be up against teams from Fort Smith and Hay River for the right to go to nationals. Three teams are entered, meaning a double round-robin will be played with the top team being declared the winner.

Sport North gets Elks Lodge boost

Team NWT will get to save a few dollars, or spend it elsewhere, for the Arctic Winter Games next month thanks to the Yellowknife Elks Lodge.

Jennie Howie, the lodge's president, handed over a cheque worth $4,500 to Doug Rentmeister, chef de mission for Team NWT, on Feb. 9.

Rentmeister said the money will be used to help pay for whatever the team needs leading up to the start of the AWG.
