It was a small, but enthusiastic group that gathered at the Hay River Community Centre for Table Tennis North’s latest event.
Table Tennis For All was back on March 30 with the tables set up on the walking track and several games over the course of the day.
Thorsten Gohl, Table Tennis North’s executive director, said the players came from Hay River and Fort Providence and the set-up was perfect for the day.
The format of the event featured an open category, which allowed for everyone to take part, no matter the skill level, he added.
Once the matches had ended, Daniel Huang of Hay River ended up as the winner, while Alex Huang of Hay River was the runner-up. Nelson Vandell of Fort Providence was third.
Both of the Huangs are former Arctic Winter Games athletes, said Gohl, having played in Whitehorse in 2012.
Table Tennis For All has now visited all five regions of the NWT, he added, and he’s hoping to continue doing this next season.
“It has been so great to see the Table Tennis For All events unfold,” he said. “Hopefully we can find some funding to continue these kind of events, as it seems to be something that the communities enjoy. That will keep the communities active and excited about sport.”
The next big event for Table Tennis North will be the South Slave Open in Fort Providence, which is scheduled for this coming Saturday.
