Catholic school board candidates hold election forum

Eight candidates hoping for a position on the next term of the Yellowknife Catholic Schools board of trustees took part in an election forum at Ecole St. Joseph School, Wednesday night.

The Yellowknife Catholic School board held an election forum at Ecole St. Joseph School, Wednesday night to lead up to next week's election. The board features three newcomers and five incumbents vying for the seven seat board. The panel of candidates included three newcomers – Lori MacMillan Gallant, Candace Meadus, and John Hazenberg as well as five incumbents – Miles Welsh, Revi Lau-a, Erin Currie, Steven Voytilla, and Tina Schauerte.

Claudia Parker, superintendent of the school board moderated the event and was supported by staff members Janet Toner, assistant superintendent of business and Simone Gessler, assistant superintendent of learning.

About 10 people attended the forum and had the opportunity to raise questions which included succession planning for Parker's replacement, school hours coinciding between elementary school and high school, dealing with cellphones in the classrooms, and the impact of the legalization of cannabis.

The election for candidates will take place on Monday, Oct. 15.
