Countering consumerism with #GivingTuesday

Following "Black Friday" and "Cyber Monday," the Yellowknife Community Foundation is looking to counter "must-have" consumerism with a must-give message.

The foundation is taking part in #GivingTuesday on Nov.28, an international day of giving that promotes philanthropy and generosity through the concerted efforts of individuals, communities and organizations, according to a release.

The annual celebration, meant to highlight the importance of giving ahead of the holiday season, calls on people to come together to better their communities by giving back to worthy charities and causes.
The Yellowknife Community Foundation's participation will help raise funds for the Yellowknife Community Fund, established in 1993 to help the foundation fulfill its mandate.

Grant requests for Yellowknife projects that concern the following issues will be considered:

  • advance the welfare of the needy and alleviate human suffering and poverty.
  • assist and promote arts and cultural activities, sport, recreation and community
    development.
  • advance education.
  • assist and advance the provision of medical services; and assist and advance other community activities or facilities of a charitable nature.
