Let the battle commence

The biggest annual sporting event in the city will write its latest, greatest chapter this week at the Multiplex.

The Wade Hamer Challenge Cup, which pits Sir John Franklin against St. Pat’s in a battle for high school hockey supremacy, gets underway this Wednesday at 1 p.m.

St. Pat’s goes into both the boys and girls games as the defending champions following big wins last year. See the next edition of Yellowknifer for a preview of the big day.

More honours for athletes

The accolades keep coming for the territory’s athletes as Sport North hosts its annual awards banquet at the Explorer Hotel tomorrow evening from 6.30 p.m.

There will be several awards up for grabs, including Athlete of the Year in the youth, junior and senior male and female categories, along with Team of the Year and Coach of the Year.


Volleyball in tournament mode

The Yk Volleyball Association’s tournament season is officially off and running as of this evening.
The association’s fall event gets going at Weledeh and St. Pat’s gymnasiums starting at 6 p.m. with the opening round-robin games. The round-robin will continue through Saturday leading into the playoffs, which start on Sunday morning.

Championship games begin at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday with the C and D divisions in action, followed by the A and B division title contests at 2 p.m. The tournament is expecting to see 26 teams play across the four divisions.
