The Northwest Territories chapter of Habitat for Humanity is opening its ReStore in the Centre Square Mall this weekend.

The used furniture shop is coming to the downtown core after the organization received its largest donation ever from Bird Construction and Clark Builders.

“We take donations from any part of the community, but the reason we’re at the downtown location now is because of a large donation from a corporate donor,” said ReStore manager Tamlin Gilbert.

The construction companies donated several seacans worth of furniture originally purchased for temporary workers contracted to build the new Stanton Territorial Hospital.

“Household goods, furniture, small appliances, some decorative stuff, paintings and photos, that sort of thing,” said Gilbert.

This will be the first time ReStore has been downtown. Hosting it in the mall will allow more of a retail experience for shoppers, said Gilbert.

“The site we had next the dump was good but it wasn’t really suitable for storing more fragile items like furnishings,” he said.

Everything in the ReStore will be sold for at least 50 per cent off of the retail price but depending on condition, the cost could be lower than that.

Funds raised from furniture sales will go directly to Habitat for Humanity NWT and support its mission to create affordable housing in the territory, said Gilbert.

“We’re hoping to keep (ReStore) open for three months, and people are able to donate directly to the store downtown if they have home furnishings and furniture they want to donate,” he said.

The organization relies on donations from the community and is seeking volunteers, Gilbert said.

“They’re welcome to come by on Saturday and see what we have for sale and if they’re interested in volunteering, we’d love to hear from them,” he said.

ReStore will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for its Saturday grand opening.
