Deh Cho residents have been travelling long distances for medical services, including the 200-km drive from Fort Liard to Fort Nelson, B.C.

Highway 7 in the NWT will now be opened on Tuesdays and Fridays.

The openings of the road, also known as the Liard Highway will occur at 1 p.m. on those days, the GNWT announced in a news release on Friday.

Travellers wishing to schedule an exit on the highway must email the government in advance, and can only re-enter the NWT on Highways 1 or 8.

"Scheduled exit times allow for greater flexibility for those who need to travel south, while following the orders of the CPHO and ensuring GNWT staff are not diverted from regular operational responsibilities," the government said.

For those travellers the usual health orders from the Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO) still apply, such as the requirement of having an approved self-isolation plan when returning to the NWT.

The partial opening of Highway 7 comes after it was closed to all traffic on March 24 on the orders of the CPHO as a way to restrict travel into the NWT to slow the spread of Covid-19.
