Long guns linked to theft from city home recovered, say RCMP

Stolen firearms linked to a recent break-in and theft from a city home were recovered over the weekend, say Yellowknife RCMP.

Between 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16 and and 2 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, multiple firearms were stolen from a safe in a detached garage on Haener Drive, according to Mounties.

Police now say some of those firearms have been located and seized following a search.

On Saturday, Mounties received a report from someone who'd seen a gun safe in the wooded area between the Niven Drive subdivision and the GNWT Legislative Assembly Building, state RCMP in a news release issued Wednesday afternoon.

Yellowknife Ground Search and Rescue was called in to assist in conducting a search of the area.

As a result, firearms, including long guns were recovered from the area. Tools and two gun safes were also located, say police.

But not all of the stolen firearms taken from the Haener Drive home have been recovered.

"We continue to investigate the theft and welcome any and all details regarding the hours of 6:30 pm October 16 and 2 am October 17 in the Haener, Niven area," states RCMP spokesperson Marie York-Condon in the news release.

Anyone with information related to the thefts are asked to contact Yellowknife RCMP at 867-669-1111 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, nwtnutips.com, (click on "submit a web tip") or text: nwtnutips to 274637.

More to come.
