A $500 donation from the Yellowknife Elks Lodge helped the United Senior Services Group get on its feet, said group president Edwin A. Baker.
Baker said the money would be used to purchase tools and shop items for their facilities in the basement of Northern United Place.
Their space was open to all senior citizens and was used for hobbies and also accepted small jobs and contracts to do maintenance and repair work within the community.
Baker thanked Bill Rossing, Gordon Greenaway, Scotty Cull, Curtis Clark and others who assisted the group in setting up the project.

City council was considering whether to award an annual $1,500 travel grant to the town's best dog musher.
The Community Services Committee recommended that a new section be added to the city's grants policy, which would allow the winner of the Canadian Championship Dog Derby to apply for the grant to defray costs of travelling to other races in the south and in Alaska.
The committee also suggested that the recipient, “must be agreeable to promoting Yellowknife at the sponsored event.”
Alderwoman Gail Cyr said, “We're trying to promote and maintain a traditional Northern event.”

The city earned $5.9 million from water fees in 1997, $248,513 less than it anticipated according to the city's draft financial statements.
Though no analysis was done, administration said the shortfall was the result of high vacancy rates and the installation of water conservation devices.

Yellowknifers were feeling the pinch at the pump.
Prices for gas had risen to as high as $1.40 per litre, which surpassed the previous high of $1.20 per litre set in March 2007.
According to Tony Macerollo, then vice president of the Canadian Petroleum Products Institute, the increase in price was not unique to Yellowknife. He cited the high cost of crude oil, which had risen to US $116 a barrel, as a reason for the elevated prices.
The high cost of transporting gas to YK was also a factor in the price at the pump, Macerollo said.
