Chemotherapy services will resume Monday at Stanton Territorial Hospital, stated a news release from the Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority.Chemotherapy services have been suspended at Stanton since late last year, after Cancer Control Alberta and the authority found chemotherapy services needed to be a higher standard.

Some patients who are receiving basic chemotherapy services will resume their treatment at the hospital, stated the news release.

Other patients who are receiving more intensive treatment will still travel to Edmonton. This was the case before the chemotherapy program suspension.

Mental health programs get a third year of funding

The federal government confirmed a third year of funding for community-led mental health and wellness programs as part of its effort to reduce the number of suicides in the Northwest Territories.

"Suicide prevention is a critical issue for Indigenous peoples across the country," NWT MP Michael McLeod said Wednesday.

Seven programs aimed at Indigenous youth will get a total of $500,000 to continue operations through 2018-19.

The half-million sum rounds out a three-year, $1.25-million commitment from Ottawa to fund community-led mental health and addictions programs in NWT, which began in 2016-17.
