NWT Physicians and GNWT finalize new five-year deal

Five-year contracts for four new physicians have been finalized, stated a release from the GNWT Department of Finance. The DOF and Northwest Territories Medical Association agreed to a salary increase of 3.5 per cent over the next five-years.

Increases to the recruitment and retention bonuses and various fees. As well as allowances, such as physician professional fees and continuing medical education allowances. Introduction of daily over-time for physicians and increases in rates for on-call, call-back, and travel clinics.

Discussions between the DOF and the NWTMA for a new five-year contract began in Jan. 2016 and ended in May 2018 when both parties agreed to the terms in principle.

The agreement was finalized in June.

Minister of Health Glen Abernethy stated the new contract will only benefit all NWT residents needing physician care.

“Providing physician services in the NWT is both challenging and rewarding and this agreement recognizes important role of physicians to achieving health outcomes for NWT residents,” said Abernethy.

The five-year contract spans from April 16, 2016 – March 31, 2021, stated the release.
