With the launch of a joint-bid by law enforcement and government agencies to bolster responsible sledding and fishing, Yellowknifers taking part in outdoor winter activities will soon be seeing a few more sleds on local trails.

Yellowknife RCMP is partnering with a number of government groups, including Environment and Climate Change Canada Wildlife Enforcement, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the GNWT Environment and Natural Resources, to "enhance visibility on the land and to engage with those taking part in winter activities," according to an RCMP release.

With multiple patrols planned for this season, the undertaking also seeks to encourage outdoor enthusiasts to dress according to the weather, as conditions can quickly change, posing risks for people out on the land.

Regional director of conservation and protection for Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Joe Justus, says the partnership is all about "education and shared stewardship."

"Patrolling around Yellowknife with our partners gives our fishery officers the chance to talk directly with the public and educate on the importance of sustainable use of our resources," Justus stated in the news release.

With an "abundance of winter sports and activities," Yellowknife RCMP Cst. Heather Cosenzo added it's important to make sure residents are prepared for the elements.

"Another big component to outdoor safety is that there is an understanding of the rules and regulations of the activities people are participating in,"  Cosenzo stated.

Stay tuned for a closer look at the operation when Yellowknifer rides along with RMCP and government officers in the coming weeks.
