Three boaters in distress have been rescued by Yellowknife RCMP in a co-ordinated search and rescue operation on Oct. 4, according to a Monday news release.

On Sunday, police received a complaint about boaters in distress close to Dettah, followed by a 9-1-1 call confirming the incident, and dispatched immediately.

The boaters were drifting in high winds and rough water after their engine failed.

RCMP mobilized the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary who deployed their vessel in the area where the boaters were last seen and found the three boaters. They were uninjured and returned safely.

Yellowknife RCMP would like to remind people to use extra caution when going on the water and plan for emergencies by leaving a detailed plan to a friend or a family member, bringing extra supplies including fuel, bringing a radio/satellite phone, having a floatation device and making sure your boat is in working condition.

The RCMP thanks the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary for their assistance.
