RCMP unit dedicated to missing, murdered people in GNWT budget

Unresolved cases of missing and murdered people dating back to 1985 could be getting a closer look following the proposed establishment of a RCMP historical case unit.

With the release of the GNWT 2018 budget on Feb. 8, Finance Minister Robert C. McLeod announced $304,000 has been earmarked to form a unit comprised of two RCMP officers and one civil servant with the purpose of investigating the 63 cases currently open in the territory.

During Monday's question period in the legislative assembly, Justice Minister Louis Sebert responded to MLA Julie Green's inquiry about the planned unit, detailing “several categories” the unit would be exploring.

“They are looking at homicides, suspicious deaths, missing persons where foul play is suspected, any missing person where the body has not been located, or when unidentified human remains have been found,” said Sebert.
