The Salvation Army is hoping it can help provide a merry Christmas for Yellowknifers in need after it exceeded its holiday fundraising goal.
It aimed to raise $42,000 but actually raised more than $43,000, as Jason Brinson, executive director of the Yellowknife Salvation Army told NNSL Media.
"All of the proceeds stays in the NWT. It stays local," he said.
The funds were raised through the Army's kettle campaigns that were set up at Canadian Tire, Walmart, the two liquor stores and the Co-op.
Most donations were cash and 11 per cent came in through a Moneris debit machine set up by the kettle.
"The person at the kettle had a debit machine and people could donate on the spot if they weren't carrying cash," Brinson said.
The donations will help support the Army's Christmas outreach including its Christmas dinner, toy programs and 400 food hampers. They will also help with its year round services like food, thrift store vouchers, shower and laundry services, and costs associated with case workers.
"I would say thank you to the community for their generosity, the kettle volunteers and all the other volunteers who help out year round. The groups who do toy drives and raise funds. Our work wouldn't be possible without them."
