Shopping local has paid off for one city woman.

Kate Cannell has been named as the winner of the #ShopYK Passport Program, an initiative launched by the City and the Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce to support local businesses.

Cannell will pocket $3,000 to be spent at any of the 56 businesses that participated in this year's program. Shops that took part offered patrons "passport" stamps for every $20 they spent in-store. Shoppers who collected 30 stamps were entered into a draw for a chance to win the shopping spree.

Cannell's name was randomly selected out of 1553 hopefuls who racked up 30 stamps, a release from the City stated Friday.

Completed passports amounted to a total value of $931,800 spent at Yellowknife businesses, the Chamber's executive director, Deneen Everett, stated.

Along with the #ShopYK Trade Show this past fall, Mayor Mark Heyck said the initiative was one of several put together by the City and Chamber in recent years.

"We recognize the importance and value that local spending provides to our economy and will continue to support our business community,” Heyck stated in the release.
