Square Dance Club pays it forward

After 20 years away from the limelight, the Yellowknife Square Dance Club has resurfaced after a large donation.

The club is donating $17,000, which was placed in guaranteed investment certificate, to the Yellowknife Seniors' Society and the NWT SPCA. A transaction that president of the club Tom Trecartin says will help repay a spiritual debt.

“We would hold all our events at the legion,” said Trecartin. “They never asked us for money, so the best we can do is give back to the members of the community who need this money.”

The seniors' society gathered inside the Baker Centre on Sunday night for their annual Christmas dinner, waiting there was Trecartin who presented Meryln Williams and director Hugh Wetmore with a large cheque for over

$8,000.

Williams former president of the seniors' society, said this money will go a long way to help.

“We will spend it wisely and hopefully Tom can look back and say 'well I helped',” said Williams. “That was very, very generous of them to consider the Yellowknife Seniors' Society.”

The other half of the funds will go to the NWT SPCA. Trecartin said he and his wife, Diane, wanted to see the money go to an organization that was in need for funds. Upon hearing about the generosity the SPCA was very grateful.

“It is very helpful at this time of year,” said SPCA President Nicole Spencer. “Any donation we get will be put toward the care of animals coming in.

This marks the 50th anniversary for the Yellowknife Square Dance Club and Trecartin said what better way to celebrate than giving back to the community which helped his organization out of over the years.
