Police in Behchoko are again calling on the public to help locate a wanted driver they say fled the scene of a fatal highway crash south of the community more than a month ago.
On April 22, a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 3 near Mosquito Creek took the life of a female passenger. Two other occupants suffered injuries.
Steven Theriault, 44, the suspected driver of the vehicle, fled the scene of the crash, say police.
A warrant for his arrest was soon issued, and police believe he may have sustained serious injuries as a result of the roll-over.
Police are still looking for the suspect, according to a news release issued Monday morning.
It’s believed he could still be in NWT, or in Northern Alberta, or in the Greater Edmonton area.
Back in April, RCMP stated another male occupant had fled the area of the crash with Theriault. Police did not mention the second occupant in Monday’s news release nor whether he has been located.
NNSL Media has asked RCMP for clarification.
Police say alcohol or drugs may have played a role in the deadly crash.
Police describe Theriault is Indigenous “ 5’8” (177 cm), 230 lbs. (105 kg) with black hair and brown eyes.”
Anyone with information about his whereabouts is urged to call Behchoko RCMP at 867-392-1111.
Updates to follow.
