Students trade pencils for chisels in De Beers ice carving workshop

High school students from St. Patrick's and Sir John Franklin put down their pencils and picked up chisels and saws Friday morning, partaking in an ice carving workshop led by Yellowknife carver Terry Pamplin and hosted by De Beers Canada and the Long John Jamboree.

The event, dubbed the De Beers Inspired Ice Student Showcase, took place at Somba K'e Civic Plaza and saw students try their hand carving the same ice that will be used during the De Beers Inspired Ice NWT Ice Carving Championship.

The contest, which sees carvers from the across the world go head to head, will run from March 22 to March 24.
